Passengers on SAS can now choose to purchase biofuels to contribute to reducing carbon dioxide emissions and improving climate change. Passengers can purchase this service at the time of booking the flight or at any time prior to the flight departure. The non-profit service launched by SAS aims to expand the market size of aviation biofuels and enhance the competitiveness of biofuels. This also coincides with SAS' long-standing sustainability strategy and is committed to reducing environmental impact with passengers.
“At SAS, we are constantly developing more sustainable products and services, including the practice of purchasing biofuels. Now, we also invite travelers to start participating in more sustainable travel mode changes. Since this summer After the practice, we have already received a lot of positive feedback. “Karl Sandlund, Executive Vice President of SAS Business, commented on this.
Compared to traditional fossil fuels, biofuels can reduce the impact of climate on carbon dioxide emissions by up to 80%. The use of biofuels is critical to sustainable development and is also significant for SAS's goal of reducing carbon emissions by 25% by 2030. At the same time, SAS is also promoting large-scale production of biofuels in the Nordic region. The price of biofuels is 3-4 times that of conventional fuels, and current production needs to be improved.
“In the short term, we believe that increasing the use of biofuels will greatly help to reduce the impact of climate reduction. By allowing passengers to purchase biofuels at their own discretion, many benefits can be realized. It will allow you to understand the extra cost of today's biofuels and feel To increase the need for commercial biofuel supply, Karl Sandlund continued.
The purchase of biofuels is a non-profit activity, SAS will not profit from the purchase of passengers, and biofuel projects will be audited by third-party auditors to ensure transparency. The purchase of passengers will be added to the biofuels already purchased by SAS, contributing further to the environment. This new service was opened to all customers in September 2019.
SAS Sustainable Aviation Fuel (Biofuels)
SAS selects only resources from crops, drinking water, diverse organisms and small-scale land to produce biofuels and ensures that crop production is not affected.
Biofuels will be shipped to the main airports of SAS: Stockholm, Oslo, Copenhagen airports or suitable airports close to the fuel origin. Current law requires the use of up to 50% of biofuels per flight. All Scandinavian aircraft are also certified to balance the selection of fossil fuels and biofuels.
SAS continues to collaborate and dialogue with multiple parties to promote the promotion, commercialization and practice of biofuels. In 2018, SAS signed an agreement with Swedish Nordic energy company Preem to ensure the mass production of biofuels.
New model of biofuels
The new model encourages passengers to purchase 20 minutes of biofuel on each flight. Currently, the corresponding price is $10/€10/100 SEK/100 NOK/70 DKK.
Passengers can purchase this service at the time of booking the flight or at any time prior to the flight departure.
This new service was opened to all customers online in September. By using "My Booking", passengers can purchase it themselves.
Travelers can purchase biofuels to offset the fossil fuels used in flights and strike a balance. For example, in an hour of flight, a 20-minute biofuel block is equivalent to 33% of the average flight fuel consumption. If passengers want to use biofuels throughout the process, they can purchase three 20-minute biofuels.
The amount of biofuels is not necessarily fully used on purchased response flights, but it will replace fossil fuels in the overall operation of SAS to achieve a balance.
